Taking Stock:  Our Roles, Dilemmas, and the Future of Assessment

This panel presentation takes a cross-sectional look at the current field of assessment and practices that need to be strengthened, developed, transformed, or retired as we look to the future. Discussion will broadly explore the role of the assessor and the goals of assessment including the importance of student voice. Paradigms and methodologies that help or hinder organizational learning and equity within both student and academic affairs assessment will be examined. The relationship of assessment to institutional accreditation and public good will also be considered. The audience is invited to join the conversation on keeping our profession relevant, meaningful, and effective.

Ruth Slotnick

Ruth Slotnick, PhD, is the Director of Assessment at Bridgewater State University, the largest public state university in the Commonwealth, located in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Ruth works collaboratively with academic deans across five colleges inclusive of 54 undergraduate and 43 graduate degree programs to use assessment-related data to inform continuous improvement of teaching and learning. Ruth also oversees periodic Core Assessment activities and leads the Academic Affairs Assessment Council comprised of academic deans and college faculty. She regularly presents at national assessment conferences and publishes on assessment. Ruth is an adjunct professor in the Higher Education MEd program at BSU and recently co-led the decennial NECHE review for the campus.  



Kaylan Baxter

Kaylan (any pronoun) is a fifth-year doctoral (Ph.D.) candidate in the Rossier School of Education and research assistant in the Pullias Center for Higher Education, both roles at the University of Southern California. Using critical organizational and race theory, they study approaches to postsecondary accountability and data use, examining their implications for the opportunities, experiences, and outcomes of racially minoritized students. Kaylan holds a B.A. in economics from Wake Forest University and an M.A. in education policy and social analysis from Teachers College at Columbia University. A decade of justice-oriented practice, across universities and academic affairs units, informs Kaylan’s research and teaching interests.



Divya Bheda

Dr. Divya Bheda is passionate about and committed to building equity and organizational responsiveness for student success. She is a leader in culturally relevant program evaluation, transformative outcomes assessment, and effective strategic planning for continuous improvement. Dr. Bheda is an independent education consultant with over 15 years of experience leading educator professional development work in brick and mortar, and online learning contexts. She holds a PhD in Critical and Socio-Cultural Studies in Education, an M.S. in Educational Leadership, and an M.A. in Mass Communication.



Laura Gambino

Dr. Laura M. Gambino is a Vice President for the New England Commission of Higher Education, where her work focuses on helping institutions and the Commission use data and conduct assessment for institutional learning and improvement.  Prior to joining NECHE in 2018, Gambino was Associate Dean for Assessment and Technology and Professor of Information Technology at Guttman Community College (CUNY) and a Visiting Scholar at the Community College Research Center (CCRC), Teacher’s College, Columbia University.  Laura also worked for 13 years at Connecticut’s Tunxis Community College as a Professor/ePortfolio Coordinator.   Gambino, a leading ePortfolio and assessment practitioner and researcher, served as a Coach for the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA). She holds an EdD in Higher Education Leadership, an M.S. in Computer and Information Science, and a B.S. in Computer Science.



Jeremy Penn

Jeremy Penn, Ph.D., M.P.H., is the Director of Assessment and Continuous Improvement at the University of Iowa College of Education. He has worked in assessment for so long that he had to check his own CV to see when he first began working in assessment. He was astonished to discover that this August will mark his 20th year of working in assessment! He lives in Iowa City, Iowa, with his wife, two children, and a big fluffy dog who keeps his spot on the couch warm for him while he is away during the day.
