Learning Assessment Through Living It: Using AI as both Tool and Teacher in Graduate Education

    January 26, 2026

    12noon to 1:00PM Eastern Time

This presentation explores an innovative graduate course where students learn assessment principles while experiencing AI-mediated assessment firsthand. Students interact with AI as personalized tutors, skeptical challengers, and debate partners, then build their own assessment-aligned GPTs. This dual approach—learning about assessment through AI while experiencing AI-mediated assessment, develops sophisticated critical thinking and transforms students from passive technology consumers into thoughtful practitioners ready for AI-enhanced educational contexts.

    Session Objectives:

    • Experience firsthand how interacting with AI chatbots enhances understanding of formative assessment principles
    • Practice designing and building custom AI chatbots for assessment purposes
    • Develop strategies for helping students critically evaluate AI tools through creation and interaction
    • Create implementation plans addressing equity and access challenges
    • Build networks with peers navigating similar innovations

    Presenter:

Susan Gracia, Visiting Professor Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú

Senior Associate Director of Data Literacy, Northeastern University

Assessment Strategies for Student Use of AI

    February 10, 2026

    12noon to 1:00PM Eastern Time

This workshop explores effective assessment strategies for courses incorporating AI-related activities and assignments. It was designed with faculty as the intended audience but could also serve as a model that Teaching and Learning center can adapt for use at their own institutions. The well-received workshop has been attended by more than 125 faculty in recent months.

    Objectives:

    • Examine diverse assessment approaches specifically designed for AI-enhanced coursework.

Use an AI Assessment Scale to identify the desired level of AI use in a specific assignment and consider ways to communicate those expectations to students.

    • After viewing exemplars and demonstrations, discussion methods for thoughtfully evaluating AI-assisted student work.

    • Use AI to develop rubrics and design authentic assessments that meaningfully measure learning outcomes in the evolving landscape of AI.

    Presenters:

Lance Eaton, Senior Associate Director – AI in Teaching and Learning,

Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR) Northeastern University

Gail Matthews-DeNatale, Senior Associate Director for Strategic Development, Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR) Northeastern University
